English Language Students’ Research Club

The “More than Words” English Language Students’ Research Club under the auspices of the Foreign Language Centre was founded in 2021 at the request of several students from the English language course led by Barbara Kubica-Daniel, MA, in the Genetics and Experimental Biology programme at the Faculty of Biology. The club initially operated on-line (during the pandemic) but later transitioned to in-person meetings. Over time, students from other years of the GEB programme, as well as from the Faculty of History, joined.
The current club format, which is also co-created by Łukasz Krajnik, MA, focuses on conversations addressing the impact of English-speaking cultures on our global present. The main theme of the meetings is the genealogy of British and American ideas, which are more or less faithfully reflected in the everyday life of other countries, nations, and continents. Together with the leaders, students explore myths and narratives that infiltrate global art, politics, and social media.
Participants in the meetings, staying true to the club's name, engage in more than just words. So far, our activities have included: presentations (also first encounters with microphones and stages in front of an audience, as well as mini Q&A sessions), collaboration with the “Symultana” Interpretation Students’ Research Club, board game sessions, song lyric translations, (always open) translation of texts and short films, and broad discussions on topics suggested by students.
All of this is done in English, in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere with tea and cake. Everybody welcome!
